Longtime Logan County Cardiologist Publishes Book

Dr. Harry Graber, longtime Logan County cardiologist, began his recent retirement with the writing and publishing of a book. The book titled, The Making of a Physician – This Was My Calling, was written as a reflection of Dr. Graber’s life and career in hopes that the book might be of assistance to the young people considering the medical profession as their vocation.  Dr. Graber shares how both genetic and environmental factors play important roles in one’s life and how these factors influence individuals as to which path in life they wish to travel.

Dr. Graber graduated in 1964 from St. Louis University School of Medicine, with his medical doctorate and came to Logan County in 1965 to join Drs. Paul Hooley and Glen Miller at what became known as Oak Hill Medical Associates, working in both family medicine and the emergency department of Mary Rutan Hospital.  A short time later, Dr. Graber returned to school to complete his residency in Internal Medicine and returned as the first Board Certified Internist to practice in Logan County.   In 1974, Dr. Graber received an invitation from Dr. Charles Wooley to receive training with the Department of Cardiology at The Ohio State University.  The program was structured for the training of a noninvasive cardiologist, designed for a physician working in a rural setting.  This training was the beginning of long–lasting relationship with The Ohio State University and Mary Rutan Hospital.  Over the next five years, the completion of Dr. Graber’s cardiovascular fellowship and the generous support of two donors, cardiovascular services began at Mary Rutan Hospital.  Throughout the remainder of Dr. Graber’s medical career, he continued his relationship with The Ohio State University and Mary Rutan Hospital until his retirement in July 2015.

Dr. Graber’s commitment to Logan County and the medical profession continues through his wishes to establish the Dr. Harry L. Graber Medical Career Employment Fund through Mary Rutan Foundation.  Proceeds from Dr. Graber’s book will be directed to this fund along with private donations received.  Fund dollars will be used annually, to assist with summer student employment opportunities for local individuals interested in pursuing a degree in the medical field.

A book signing will take place in the main lobby of Mary Rutan Hospital on Wednesday, October 12th from Noon until 4 p.m. and on Thursday, November 3rd from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Books may be purchased in the Mary Rutan Hospital Gift Shop and on Amazon at a cost of $29.99 for hard back and $19.99 for paper back versions.

Dr. Graber is available for speaking engagements and additional book signing opportunities.  To schedule a time, please call 937-465-0117.
